Paul Gray, Delivery Captain, Partner, PaulG@CardinalSailing.com
Paul has spent a lifetime around boats, growing up on New Jersey's Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays and Shrewsbury and Navisink Rivers aboard his family's lapstrake Mahogany boat. Early trips to New York's South Street Seaport ignited a love of sailing and traditional craft that lasts to this day.
He purchased his first sailboat, a 14' centerboard sloop, with a $500 loan from his sister. After many boats and many years, Paul spent eleven years sailing his 2-masted schooner, Quintessence, on the waters bounded by Martha's Vineyard, MA and Cape Charles, VA prior to selling her a few years ago. Paul has recently acquired another 2-masted schooner, Elisara, a Lazy Jack 32.
In addition to sailing his own boats, Paul crewed on a marine science education vessel run by the Wallops Island Marine Science Consortium out of Chincoteague, VA and served as relief mate aboard the dive boat Spring Tide out of Brielle, NJ. Paul has volunteered his time as crew and boat carpenter on New Jersey's tall ship A. J. Meerwald out of Bivalve, NJ, as transit crew aboard Mystic Seaport's Brilliant, the schooner Amistad, and the Classic Yacht Restoration Guild's 1888 cutter Elf. Paul also joined as crew and watch captain, whenever possible, aboard Mystic Whaler, out of New London, CT, now located in California.
Paul enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge, having taught NJ Boating Safety Courses through Cardinal Sailing and Boating Safety, Seamanship, Sailing and basic Piloting classes through the US Power Squadrons. Paul is an American Sailing Association certified Keelboat, Bareboat and Coastal Cruising instructor.
